Guangxu was emperor of China during the Qing dynasty from 1875 to 1908. He succeeded the then emperor Tongzhi. Cixi and Cian were again designated as co-regents, but Cixi assumed full power. In 1898, after a discussion with the radical reformer Liang Qichao, the emperor introduced a series of reforms. From June 11 to September 21, he issued edicts for one hundred and three days, which were to reform the country in many respects, the Hundred Days of Reform. Most of the reforms were reversed by Cixi. Guangxu was succeeded by child emperor Xuantong, also named by Cixi. On display is an elegant rare Chinese porcelain Meiping vase, beautifully hand decorated in blue and white. Starting from a low round foot, we see a narrowing lower part that progressively turns into an inverted pear-shaped corpus. At the top this changes into rounded shoulders with a short vertical circular neckline with a rounded thickened edge. The corpus is in various shades of cobalt blue underglaze, on a milky white ground, hand-painted with a decor of a standing figure in profile of a sage with a hat on his head. He wears a long robe with 5 characters, with sword in left hand and standing on a round cloud pattern. To the right of it sit two men, going from child to student, and a woman on a buffalo. The latter also stands on a round cloud pattern that spreads downwards. The student has a kite in his hands. A house between the winding clouds has also been painted on the corpus and shoulder. At the bottom we see a typical late 19th or early 20th century base ring with a glazed base on which a four-character apocryphal Chien Lung nian zhi mark is hand-painted in blue under the glaze in seal writing. The vase dates from the late 19th century, Guangxu Imperial period.

Condition: some limited firing flaws but otherwise perfect.
