Started by Jean Daum in 1878, the factory was taken over in 1887 by two of his sons, Jean-Louis and Jean-Louis Augustein. Various techniques for processing double or multi-layered cameo glass (trap glass) were developed: engraving, processing with acids, painting, gilding, inlay and overlay of glass powders in various colors, and intercalary technique. Important artists worked for Daum : Jacques Grüber, Edgar Brandt, André Groult, Louis Majorelle and the brothers Nic. The golden age for Daum Nancy was probably between 1895 and 1914. During this period, Daum registered patents and successfully experimented with building and decorating techniques that make their art so unique and highly desirable today. From 1908 to 1914, objects in pâte made the Verre (glass paste) in cooperation with Almaric Walter. In the 1920s, the production of cameo glass will decline in favor of etched glass. From 1918 to 1940, the switch was made to the art deco style, under the direction of Paul Daum. Since 1945, modern glass and crystal objects have been made under the direction of Michel Daum. The glass factory still exists under the name of “Cristallerie Daum”. On display is a sublime soliflore vase in Art Nouveau style, made by the glass factory of Daum and Frères around 1895 to 1900. The vase has a round narrowing base and an onion-shaped corpus from which a long, slightly tapered cylindrical neck starts. The gold-plated round narrower edge is nicely rounded. Powder glass, flux and colorants are fused into a mould, and are covered externally with a yellow-orange powder layer, with pink and blue stripe-shaped inlays, which is also hammered over the entire surface. An acid-etched thistle decor is applied in cameo on top, with beautiful thistles and twisting stems and leaves, enamelled in various shades of brown-red. The top edge is gilded with vertical runners. The base is also gilded all around. The vase has a nicely polished base at the bottom on which a gilded handwritten mark Daum Nancy with the cross of Lorraine. The vase dates from about 1895-1900.
