More information
Shown is a faience five-piece octagonal cabinet set made by the “porcelain dish” of Delft during the 18th century. It concerns three baluster-shaped vases with lid and two cylindrical open vases. A landscape decor in underglaze blue is painted on a light bluish-white tin glaze. On the corpus, a large cartouche on the front, bordered in relief by C-curls, depicts a decor of a standing fisherman. Behind him is an eared flower pot on a large cubic block. We also see two ducks in the water and houses in the distance. Flowers and foliage can be seen at the bottom and top of the cartouche. The octagonal base and neck are decorated with a simple floral motif. One large leafy branch is painted on the back. The largest central vase, also in a cartouche outlined in relief with C-curls, shows a landscape decoration of a man with two dogs, a sailing boat, a church and a house. Top and bottom show a mosaic pattern. At the bottom the foot is edged with a simple concentric line. On the back also a simple branch motif. The octagonal lids are tapered upwards with a bird trying to eat a cherry on top. The large vase is signed at the bottom in blue underglaze with the mark for Johannes van Duijn of the manufacturer “the porcelain dish”, in use since 1764. One of the other vases is marked with the sign for the “porcelain ax”. The five vases create a beautiful whole that can be dated to the last quarter of the 18th century.
Condition: restorations on two lids, otherwise in good condition, but with the classic shards.
