Gustave Van Vaerenbergh was born in Ghent in 1873 and died in Schaerbeek in 1927. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. At first he was mainly active as a producer, but from 1907 he is registered as a sculptor. First working in the company Carli et, he is said to have had his own workshop in Ixelles from 1925. He mainly made busts of women in the early Art Nouveau style, but also children, animals and Pierrot in various materials such as marble, bronze, alabaster, pottery and plaster and sometimes also chryselephantines. He drew his work with G. Van Vaerenbergh or G.V. Vaerenbergh. Sometimes the letter G is confused with George, another artist.

The work shown is the bronze “Pierrot à la mandolin”, a smaller version of his (mostly) larger works. The bronze is gilded and patinated. A powerful Pierrot figure is portrayed in an early art nouveau style. With a powerful facial expression, the impressive collar and beautifully draped cloth with studs and flowing trousers, the mandolin in both arms, this Pierrot embodies the smile behind a tear. He stands on a round, slightly raised base. Normally there is a marble elevation below, but this is missing here. However, this does not diminish the power of the image, on the contrary. The classic engraved G.V. Van Vaerenbergh can be seen closely.

Condition: The gilding is somewhat worn here and there, but has acquired a nice patina with age. Furthermore, injury-free.
