Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann (August 28, 1879 – November 15, 1933), also called Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann, was a French furniture designer and interior decorator, who was one of the most important figures in the Art Deco movement. His furniture featured sleek designs, expensive and exotic materials and fine craftsmanship, becoming a symbol of Art Deco luxury and modernity. It also generated a response from other designers and architects, such as Le Corbusier, who called for simpler, functional furniture. All furniture designs originated with Ruhlmann, who carried a sketchbook with him at all times. Each individual piece began with a drawing on a scale to one-hundredth of the finished size, which was then refined into a more finished drawing one-tenth of the finished size, and finally a full-scale drawing that was used to make the furniture piece. to make. The artists from his studio had to copy exactly the original ideas of the master.

Presented is the world famous Ruhlmann wastepaper basket, made of wood and copper. This is made up of four trapezoidal wooden surfaces and a wooden base, whereby the surfaces are connected to each other by means of pleated copper bands. This creates a particularly airy whole. The wood used may be rosewood. This wastebasket dates from the art deco period, around 1930. It is not signed.
