Almaric Walter was one of the pioneers in France to work in the glass industry during the art nouveau and art deco period with pâte de verre, a type of glass paste of different colors that was applied in a mold and fired at a temperature of approx. 1000 degrees. Before 1914 he worked for the firm Daum Frères, and after the first world war he started his own company, developing objects in the art deco style while retaining the characteristics of art nouveau. One of his most important designers was Henri Bergé. This is an Art Nouveau / Deco figure in the shape of a sitting hare on a raised oval base. The hare rests on its four legs with one ear in the air and the eyes open. The design still shows the undulating line of Art Nouveau, but is also sleek, inherent to the Art Deco style of those years. The color is very dark brown to almost dark burgundy. You would like to grab and stroke that hare immediately. The rounded oval base is red-burgundy in color. The underside is polished flat. The object is marked with the names modeled in the mold in low relief, in block letters for “A. WALTER NANCY ”and in small letters“ Bergé sc ”.
