Meer informatie

Levasseur Alexandre was a French bronze caster at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. There is little information available about this man. Little information can be found about the artist A. Levasseur. However, a study of the images of Henri Louis Levasseur (Paris, April 16, 1853 – 1934) indicates that this may be the same artist. These are very similar in style, subjects and finish. Calligraphically speaking, the signatures are also strongly related, with the H as Henri’s initial often looking very much like an A. Some images can be found, sometimes assigned to Alexandre, other times to Henri. We are showing a beautiful, exceptional chocolate brown patinated bronze on a high round base that represents a mythological setting of the Roman goddess Diana. Diana holds a bow in her left hand while her right arm is held straight up. It is striking that she wears a curved moon-shaped diadem on her head. On the plateau of the pedestal lies a recently shot deer with a beautiful head and its carcass. We also see a beautifully detailed quiver. The bronze is signed on the plateau with the engraved letters “A. Levasseur”. At the front of the pedestal is a curly brown patinated cartouche with the text “Diane chasseresse/ par Levasseur /1st medal/ au salon-hors-concours. As mentioned above, A. Levasseur may be a pseudonym for Henri Louis Levasseur. The images she or he made are very similar in terms of style, subjects and finish. This old bronze dates from around 1900.
Condition: patina somewhat worn off in the places used to lift the bronze, but otherwise in very good condition.
