This uniquely beautiful book (atlas) contains a collection of 106 Japanese, mostly colored prints. These are all originally handmade, initially in black ink with brush on very thin paper. This was then transferred to a wooden block so that a copy appeared on it. The wood was then cut along the lines to create a block in relief. They then apply colors and a fine moist paper is imposed that absorbs the drawing and colors and only produced one unique specimen. As a source of inspiration, these Japanese used everyday life with its happy moments. Especially the lives of the better courtesans are portrayed, although this had no erotic purpose. Dance and theater are also an important source of inspiration, as well as sumo wrestlers, birds and flowers, legendary characters, the landscape, … The majority of the prints depicted here are made by students of the “Ukiyo-e” school and stretch out from the mid-17th to the mid-19th century. Of course these are only reproductions of the original. If desired, they can be cut out and framed. It is and will remain a rare release. The book is in used but still good condition.
