We show a pair of porcelain egg-shaped vases, possibly made in Brussels in the 19th century. On a square base stands a concentrically narrowing and then spreading foot with gilding. This continues into the baluster-shaped body and then becomes a cylindrical neck that spreads into a round edge. On both sides of the corpus there are two vertical gooseneck handles that are gold-plated. The body of one vase is polychrome hand-painted on the front with a terrace decor of two lovers holding hands, standing on a balcony with a view of trees in the distance. The enamel colors include dark blue, yellow, orange, purple, dark green, brown, white, black, … The back shows a beautiful landscape decor with a water feature at the bottom, above a strip of land with a Mediterranean-looking country house with trees, and changing into mountains with light blue sky. The other vase again shows a terrace decor at the front, now with a seated couple, the man reading from a book. Analogous polychrome colors were used. The reverse shows an almost identical landscape decor as the other vase although there are some differences. Furthermore, both vases are extensively gilded, although this has largely worn off over time. At the bottom we see a wide unglazed foot ring with a glazed round deep but closed base. We also see screws with which the base and body are attached to each other. There is no mark. We date these vases around 1850-1870.
Condition: vases are perfect (one has a firing flaw on the inner edge), but the gilding of both has worn off significantly over time.
