Meer informatie

Large quantities of faience were made in France before and during the French Revolution in 1793. It concerns so-called; Faience Revolutionary. The majority (90%) was painted by the Nevers factory. After the Revolution, it was mainly the Napoleon plates who were crowned Emperor of the French on December 2, 1804 until April 11, 1814. His marriage to Joséphine de Beauharnais remained childless. Here we see a faience round scaly plate where on a white tin glaze layer on the shelf in underglaze high fire colors blue, brown, yellow-ocher and green, the image of Joséphine de Beauharnais, first wife of Napoleon, was hand painted. The plate is also dated 1804, the year Napoleon had himself crowned Emperor. The area is outlined by a black concentric line. The elevation and sloping flat edge are painted with a frieze of garlands of flowers and leaves. At the back, the plate is also tin-glazed with a rosy pâte shine through. There is no stand ring. We also see three must on which the plate was baked. The plate is quite heavy in weight. It is not marked. Dated 1804.

Condition: baking flaw on the shelf and edge, otherwise perfectly normal condition.
