Large quantities of faience were made in France before and during the French Revolution in 1793. The majority (90%) was painted by the Nevers factory. Here we see a faience round scaly plate where on a white tin glaze layer on the shelf in underglaze high fire colors black, blue, brown, yellow, orange and green, the image of Santerre, was hand transfer printed with hans painted details. The plate is also titled and dated “Santerre” and “1793”, year of the French Revolution. Santerre acted as general commander of the National Guard but had the Castle des Tuilleries occupied in 1992 in order to put pressure on Louis XVI to resign. The area is outlined by a black concentric line. The elevation and sloping flat edge are painted with a frieze of garlands of flowers and leaves. At the back, the plate is also tin-glazed with a rosy pâte shine through. There is no stand ring. We also see three must on which the plate was baked. The plate is quite heavy in weight. It is not marked. It was made around 1820.
Condition: minimal edge flakes, a few dents in the glaze, otherwise perfectly normal condition.
