René Emile Etienne Guiette was born in Antwerp in 1893 and died in Wilrijk in 1976. He studied Oriental Phililogy and often stayed in Paris. His style transitions from expressionism to cubism and post-cubism and finally to Eastern-inspired abstract art. His work sometimes leans towards the art brut, sometimes towards a more mediative style. In the period 1945-1955 Guiette goes in search of the elementary and the mystery. He wanted to rediscover the mystery and magic of beings and things through a much more primitive suggestive figuration. The deformations that have characterized his work from then on have certainly to do with his admiration for tribal art. He wanted to make the invisible visible. “Done with the optical illusion, long live the delusion”. He was greatly influenced by Paul Klee and Jean Dubuffet. In 1948 Guiette joined “L’Art Brut”. His works derive their power of expression from the primitivism of matter and strip away from all the traditional values ​​of pictorial art. Later still he devoted himself to a kind of transubstantiation of the matter that makes him discover the spirituality of the sign, a much more meditative art.
