Georg Hepplewith was a cabinet maker whose furniture dates from 1780-1810. It is neoclassical in style. It often overlaps with the furniture of Sheraton, another famous cabinet developer. Hepplewith’s furniture is characterized by the use of contrasting veneer and marquetry called marquetry. Mostly he used mahogany but also satinwood, rosewood, sycamore and others. The legs are generally simple, straight and often narrowing. The furniture is enriched with decorative elements such as ornate swags, curling ribbons, feathers and urns. The back is often shield-shaped. It is usually graceful and delicate in aspect.

Presented are six identical 18th century antique Hepplewith style chairs, made in Holland. They are made from rosewood. Rosewood is a hardwood species and very popular for its properties and applications. They are inlaid with a fine satin wood veneer. The typical shield motif is also used here, with an oval decorative element in the center with vertical finely sculpted perforated godroned wood bands and surrounded by small sculpted bay leaves. At the top they are decorated with palmettes. At the bottom it connects to the circumference by means of a jouled spacer. They have rejuvenating legs “en gaine” in the front and legs in the shape of a saber at the back. They have a plaid braided wicker seat on a trapezoidal frame. Very beautiful antique top furniture !!

Condition: minor damage to the wicker seat of one chair, otherwise perfect status.
