Presented is a beautiful diamond-shaped jar with 4 flat walls and a polychrome painted lid. At the bottom, the top glaze is marked with the gold anchor used by the English Chelsea manufacturer in the 18th century (1754-69). However, this seems a bit bigger than normal. The jar is beautifully hand painted polychrome overglaze on a perfect white glaze with exotic birds (according to James Gilles) surrounded by a wreath of green leaves. The latter are surrounded by black. Both at the top and at the bottom there is a beautiful frieze of shiny gilded curls with a very warm turquoise in between. The diamond-shaped lid has four convex flanks. It is also painted with an exotic bird and a butterfly. The handle is in the shape of a pine cone with gilded edges and turquoise stripes. Although suggestive of a Chelsea object from the 18th century period of the “golden anchor”, this presented object seems to me rather a late 19th century copy as the gold anchor is too large for an original golden anchor Chelsea object. Possibly it is a French Parisian reproduction made by E. Samson or a Coalport reproduction in bone china?
Condition: perfect.
