Pâte de verre is a concept in which a mold is filled with glass granules of different colors, heated until the glass melts into one homogeneous mass, after cooling it is removed from the mold, cleaned and, where desired, shiny. The problems that can arise during this process are many; breakage of the mold, incorrect temperature of heating, unwanted color mixing, cracks in the glass mass, the inability to view the glass during firing, the difficulty of three-dimensional stacking of the glass beads in the mold. Walter developed the capacity to make master molds and to make wax copies. Until 1914 he worked for the Daum Frères company, but from 1920 he founded his own factory.
