Meer informatie
Founded by Carl Hagenauer in 1898, the Werkstätte Hagenauer Wien – (wHw) – was a family business in Vienna that made fine handmade objects for decoration and use. The company ceased operations in 1987. His sons Karl (1898 – 1956) and Franz (1906 – 1986) also became well-known designers. Karl was an important designer in the art deco style. He designed the company’s trademark “wHw”. His brother Franz specialized in sculpture, especially with metal.
The object presented here is a manifest art deco figure that is very refined in its line formation. It concerns an African warrior in a fighting position with spear and shield. He wears feathers on his head and a straw apron around his waist. The figure is partly squatting with both legs on a flat round base. At the bottom it is marked with the embossed marks in capital letter “HAGENAUER WIEN” and “MADE IN WIEN AUSTRIA” with the letters “wHw” in the middle in a small circle. For Wiener Hagenauer Werkstätte. Art Deco period around 1925.
