Joseph Mougin was born in Nancy, and like his younger brother Pierre came from a glasswork family, but together they made careers in the ceramic sector. They became friends of Victor Prouvé. Their first work is strongly linked to the Art Nouveau movement. After WWI, they are put to work in the Lunèville faience factory (which formed a group with Saint-Clèment and Badonviller) where they devote themselves to the geometric shape and volumes of Art Deco. Almost at the same time, Georges (Géo) Condé is also hired as a modelist. He was commissioned to develop the decor of the vases, with a slight influence of Cubism, made by the Mougin brothers. At the same time, Géo developed a subsidiary in crackled faience for Saint-Clèment, where he collaborated with Charles Lemanceau. His animal figures are sold by the large warehouses. Condé became the artistic director of the faienceriaen of Lunèville, Saint-Clément and Badonviller until the 1930s. Pierre Mougin ceased his activity as a ceramist in 1933 while Joseph remained active throughout his life.

Presented is a large ovoid art deco grès vase, developed by Géo Condé and executed by the Mougin brothers, in Lunéville near Nancy. There is a clear Cubist influence. On the other hand, strongly geometric with a repeating decor of deeply incised stylized leaves interspersed with vertical lines, on which a finely crackled white-cream and brown glaze. The vase stands on a large round low base and tapered at the top, with three parallel lines all around, to a small neck where it merges into a wider thick-walled round collar. At the bottom of the base the vase is stamped with “MOUGIN NANCY.” and “MODELE DE G. CONDE” and “175 .L J”.
