Offered are two beautifully decorated Chinese porcelain oval bowls with lid and matching tray. These are hand painted over the cover with a Kanton Famille Rose Medallion decor. The basic pattern of this decor consists of the two central gilded circles with four oval cartouches around them. Inside the circle is a bird on a peony tree and around it normally four (in this case two) butterflies are hand painted. The cartouches are alternately decorated with flowers and birds, and with characters in a house. The whole is filled with green curls and other decorations. In the Canton famille rose medallion decor, the green is, in addition to the rose, a much used color. The outlines are sometimes, but not always, as here on the lids, painted in black. The scaly oval lid has a gilded handle in the shape of a pine cone. The two oval high bowls with a flat contoured rim are painted on the outside with the same type of decor. Inside, they are lavishly decorated on both the shelf and the side walls with floral motifs that are outlined in black here. The bowls have an unglazed rim on which the lid with an unglazed rim fits. The bowls have an unglazed base. painted with black characters, presumably a painting mark. The two oval accompanying trays are decorated in the same Canton famille rose medallion decor but finer on a whiter cover, and are also richly gilded. They also have an unglazed base and are not marked either. So beautiful elegant export porcelain! Probably from the reign of Emperor Tao-kuang (1821-50).

Condition: small shard of edge on one of the lids, otherwise perfect.
